“I’m not ready yet,” Briella said suddenly, panicking.

“You are ready,” the doctor assured her. “You can do this.”

“But…I need something for the pain!”

The doctor smiled. He had seen this hundreds of times - all women were nervous about this part. “You will forget about the pain in a moment,” he said. “Trust me.”

Kason wiped Briella’s forehead with a washcloth. “You are so strong,’ he whispered to her.

“As soon as your next contraction starts, we’re going to have you start pushing,” the doctor said. “Okay, here we go. On the count of three, give me a good push. One, two, three, go!”

Briella made a face as she started pushing. She grasped Kason’s hand even harder, marking him with her nails.

When the contraction was over, Kason looked down at her. “I love you so much! You’re doing great.” He bent over and kissed her forehead, and wiped her face again.

“Give me some room to breathe!” Briella growled.

Kason was thrown at first, but the nurse on the other side of Briella smiled. “She’s delivering a baby,” the nurse said. “You’re lucky. Most women hate their husbands at this stage.”

“I love you, damn it, but don’t touch me,” Briella hissed.

Kason hid a smile. What a story he would have to tell the kids!

The doctor told Briella to push again. For the next hour, Briella pushed with all her might until the first baby finally came free of her body. Briella and Kason both cried tears of joy and relief, but the relief was short lived, as Briella had to start pushing again.

“Kamden Bruce is already here,” he said, as they listened to their baby’s lusty cries. “Now Jayce Remington has to have his say.”

Ten minutes later, the cries of a second baby filled the air.

Briella and the babies were all cleaned up, then the twins were handed over to the new and proud mommy and daddy. Kason stared down at the babies, trying to blink his tears away.

“They are so beautiful. Can you believe we created them? These are our babies, Briella!” He turned to look at her. She was crying openly, sobbing as she held her son close to her.

“Look at how perfect our little babies are,” she managed to say. “I love them so much already! How is it possible to love them so much already?”

Kason watched their little faces as the children calmed down and stared at the world around them for the first time. “It just is,” he said softly.

When Briella was moved with her babies to a recovery room, they had visitors: Raelynn, Bruce and Aubrie.

“Ah! How cute are they?” Aubrie gushed. “They’re so tiny!”

Raelynn and Bruce came over closer to the bed, and each took a baby.

“They’re just beautiful!” Raelynn said, trying to keep from crying long enough to get a good look at her grandsons. . “Congratulations, you two. I am so proud of you. Wow, I’m really a grandma!”

“And I’m really a grandpa! They are so precious!” Bruce said, then leaned down and kissed Briella’s forehead. “How are you feeling, Mommy?”

Briella mustered a small smile. “I’m sore, but it was all worth it!”

Kason and his family talked quietly for a while, then the nurse came in to take the babies to the nursery. Kason’s family left for the night, and said they’d call Dexter and Mila to tell them the babies were born. Kason sat in the chair next to Briella’s bed and watched her while she slept. Soon, he drifted off to join her.

Meanwhile, Dexter sat on the couch, all alone in his house. He was waiting for Mila to get home from her date, and hoped that she wouldn’t be much longer. Just as he was beginning to worry, he heard the front door open. Mila slowly walked in and was startled when she saw Dexter waiting for her.

“So, did you have fun?” Dexter asked bitterly.

“What does it matter to you?” Mila snapped.

“Why are you doing this Mila? Why are you trying to hurt me? To hurt us?” Dexter asked, the pain in his voice evident.

“In case you forgot, when we broke up, you weren’t exactly complaining. Besides, it’s not like you’ve even tried to get back with me. I obviously mean so little to you that you can let me go easily, but then you say I’m hurting you?” Mila said with anger. “Face it Dexter, you’re just mad that I went out with someone tonight. You don’t want to be around me, but you don’t want anyone else to be with me either. You can’t have it both ways.”

“How did this all get so blown out of proportion?” Dexter asked, putting his head in his hands. “Mila, please sit down and listen to me. I need to say something to you, but I need you to listen, and really hear what I have to say.”

Mila began to protest, but shut up and sat down instead.

  “Go ahead,” she said shortly.

“When we were at Kason and Briella’s wedding, I was jealous of what they had, but not for the reasons you think. I felt I wasn’t good enough for you, and that you deserved better. I didn’t agree to this separation between us because I don’t love you. I agreed because I love you too much and I figured you were better off without me. I tried to let you go, but it was hard. I wanted to put some distance between you and me, thinking it would help me get over you. But it didn’t work. I still love you Mila, and I can’t let you go,” Dexter told her, his eyes full of sorrow.

He got off the couch and kneeled in front of her. “Mila, you mean the world to me, and I know I don’t show it as openly as Kason does with Briella, but it doesn’t mean that I love you any less. I need you like I need my next breath.”

Dexter reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box. He opened the lid to show Mila a beautiful diamond ring. “Mila, will you take me back and marry me?”

Mila sat there in shock. She looked back and forth between the ring and Dexter’s eyes. “Are you asking me because you don’t want anyone else to have me, or do you really want to marry me?”

“Would you quit being so damn stubborn? I love you, you fool! I want you to be mine for the rest of our lives. I want to wake up next to you every morning, holding you in my arms thinking how wonderful my wife is. I want kids with you, and maybe even a dog or two. Mila, I love you, and I’ve been miserable without you. If you want me to beg, I will…”

Just as Mila opened her mouth to answer, the phone started ringing. Dexter put his hand on her arm to stop her from answering. When the machine clicked on, they heard Raelynn’s voice and Mila swiped the phone up. “Raelynn, how is everything?”

“I just wanted to let you and Dexter know that Briella and Kason had the babies tonight. Two very healthy boys. I think they’re asleep for the night, but we’re going back up in the morning, and we thought you and Dexter might want to come too, around nine?”

“Oh, my…already? How wonderful! Are they just beautiful?”

  Raelynn laughed. “Beyond beautiful.”

“We’ll be there. Thanks for calling, Raelynn.”

Mila hung up the phone. She turned to Dexter, who was still kneeling on the floor with the ring box open.

“Briella and Kason had the babies tonight. We’re meeting them all at the hospital tomorrow morning,” Mila told him. She got up and tried to walk to the kitchen, but Dexter grabbed her leg and clung to it. Mila started laughing when she looked down at his boyish smile.

“I haven’t gotten my answer yet, and you’re not leaving until I get one,” Dexter told her.

“Well, I just thought I’d go get some champagne so we could celebrate,” Mila said.

“Does that mean what I think it means?” Dexter asked.

“Yes, it means that I will marry you. Now give me the ring so I can go get the champagne!” Mila said, laughing.

“Yes, ma’am!” Dexter stood up and slipped the ring on Mila’s finger. He looked into her eyes before he pulled her in for a long awaited kiss. “Oh man, I’ve been wishing so long to do that!” He smiled at her. “I love you so much, please don’t ever doubt that.”

  “I l
ove you too. I’m sorry for acting selfish, and comparing our relationship to everyone else’s. I love what we have together. I guess I just needed to figure it out,” Mila said, tears starting to roll down her face. “I’ve missed you so much!”

“I’ve missed you too. Now, how about that champagne? I know the perfect spot to drink it!” Dexter said, as he grabbed the champagne glasses out of the cupboard. He took Mila’s hand after she had the champagne, and led her up to the bedroom.

“You’re right. This is the perfect spot. Now, let’s start celebrating!” Mila said, her voice full of lust, her eyes full of love.

The next morning, Mila and Dexter headed to the hospital earlier than they had planned on meeting Kason’s family. They had been up all night celebrating their engagement, so they headed to the hospital early.

When they walked into Briella’s room, both Kason and Briella were holding babies. Briella looked up and smiled. “Hey guys, come on in.”

Mila went Briella and gave her a light hug, trying not to disturb the baby. “Ah, he’s so cute!”

“Thanks. This is Jayce Remington, Kason has Kamden Bruce.”

“You look great for just giving birth to two babies,” Dexter said, as he leaned over and kissed her cheek.

“Thanks. You and Mila seem to be glowing yourselves. Any reason why?” Briella asked.

Mila grinned. “Well, last night Dexter asked me to marry him, and I said yes.” She showed Briella the ring on her finger and beamed.

“It’s about damn time!” Briella cried.

Jayce was startled and began crying. “Oh, I’m so sorry, sweetie! Mommy didn’t mean to scare you.” Briella said, as she rocked the baby back and forth. He slowly calmed down. “I guess I need to get used to having a baby around. Congratulations, though.”

Kason laughed. “So, when’s the wedding?”

“Well, we were thinking about the end of May, in another month or so. We want to go down to the Gulf of Mexico and get married on the beach down there. Just something small, with a Justice of the Peace or something,” Mila said.

“Sounds romantic,” Briella told her, glad that her friends finally saw the love that they shared.

Briella saw the way Mila was eying her new son, as though she wanted to pick him up and cuddle him. “So, you want to hold the baby?” Briella asked.

Mila immediately reached for Jayce and cradled him against her body. “Why, he hardly weighs a thing!” she said in surprise. “He is so small and cuddly!”

“You know, he didn’t feel so small coming out!” Briella joked.

“You guys are all naturals. Even you, Mila. You look so comfortable holding the babies.” Dexter said.

“Well, I may look like a natural, but I’m sure not ready for this,” Mila told Dexter, and Dexter gave a sigh of relief.

Raelynn came in with Bruce and Aubrie, all of them carrying bags of food. “How are my grandbabies today?” Raelynn asked.

He handed Kamden over to his mother when she put the food down. “Thanks for breakfast, Mom.” He sat on the edge of Briella’s bed and put his arm around his wife, feeding her a bagel.

Everyone talked happily, passing the babies around. Briella and Kason cuddled on her bed, watching their family.

“So, do you regret coming to Texas last year?” Kason asked her quietly, so only she could hear.

“Not a single regret in the world. I didn’t think I could ever be this happy. I love you so much and I love our babies. You’ve given me so much over the past year and a half, and I can’t even begin to tell you how much it means to me. You’re the best husband in the world!” Briella whispered back.

Kason hugged her closer. “I was so lost without you.”

Kason looked around at the people in the room, thankful for each and every one of them. His mind drifted to thoughts of Charlee, and he silently thanked her for bringing Briella into his life. He knew she was watching over them, and would always be their guardian angel.
